Songfacts®:

  • The title track of Little Big Town's eighth album, this melancholy tune was penned by Nashville songwriter Connie Harrington (Blake Shelton's "Mine Would Be You") and TJ Osborne of Brothers Osborne.
  • The heartbreaking track finds is set in the aftermath of a love that has ended.

I thought I was the hero of your heart
But I turned out to be The Breaker

Phillip Sweet told Taste of Country "The Breaker" was a song the band was instantly moved by.

"The way it was approached from a different angle, the fact that the one who's singing the song feels remorseful, and they're the one who broke the other person's heart," he said. "We had never really heard it said in that way, and it was a cool take, and it sounded different."
  • When it came time to choosing an album title, The Breaker seemed like a natural fit for the LBT quartet. "The record is called The Breaker for multiple reasons," Karen Fairchild said. "I think there's lots of ways that you get broken. I think there are some times you are the breaker. Sometimes it's like looking ahead at the future and what's on the horizon, breaking. Just so many ways it ties into the record, and for us as a band."
