Songfacts®:

  • This collaboration between Belgian DJ Lost Frequencies and British singer Calum Scott is a sad electro-pop banger about a lost love. Scott starts off recounting a romantic road trip before asking where their relationship went wrong. He's now lost touch with his former lover and wonders where they are now.
  • Lost Frequencies wrote the song with Joacim Persson, Dag Lundberg, Sebastian Arman, and Michael Patrick Kelly. As someone who is not a native English speaker, the Belgian DJ likes to work with writers who know their way around English lyrics.
  • You're just like my favorite song going round and round in my head

Lost Frequencies treats the introduction with delays and panning, giving the sensation of a dream. "I like to listen to the lyrics and play with them and think about how they come over in the track, he told Happy magazine. "But for this one, it's something I like to do in most of my tracks: a catchy intro that filters out and when the rest of the track comes in, it's a warm feeling - especially when the bottom end kicks in. It's a move I like, but it works well in this track, especially."
  • Originally, Lost Frequencies had a seven-minute arrangement of the track, which he wasn't sure how to cut because he didn't have a favorite or worst part. He'd been in touch with Scott before when the singer asked him to remix his "Dancing On My Own" single. That didn't work out, but they stayed in contact, so Lost Frequencies sent him the "Where are You Now" demo. Scott loved it and agreed to be the singer. "When he sent back the vocal, I was super inspired, so with that, I finished the final arrangement," the Belgian recalled. "I felt the vibe of the track thanks to Calum's voice."
  • Half a year after Lost Frequencies released the track, "Where Are You Now" entered the UK Top 10 for the first time. Scott attributes its belated success to people meeting up again after lockdown. "It's all about coming together, literally "hey, it's been too long." It's about reconnecting and bringing people back together again," he told OfficialCharts.com. "That's what we've been missing these last two years, right?"
