Songfacts®:

  • Lou Gramm wrote this song with Holly Knight, whose many hits as a co-writer include "Love Is A Battlefield" for Pat Benatar and "Rag Doll" for Aerosmith.

The song is about a couple that is having some problems in their relationship and have been talking about each other behind their backs. Gramm takes a very intimate and reassuring voice, explaining that they should deal with their issues internally, as it tears him up to hear about it from friends. He wants her to know that it hurts him, and that she can come to him directly. He takes a very understanding tone, explaining that they will be fine if they stick together.

Knight and Gramm wrote the song in one afternoon, crafting this surefire hit with a relatable, affectionate lyric and a killer pre-chorus:

Now don't you know that one cold word
Is going to lead to another
And then we'll have nowhere to go
  • Lou Gramm was lead singer of Foreigner at the time, and along with Mick Jones, their primary songwriter. "Just Between You and Me" was the big hit from his second solo album, Long Hard Look; his first album, Ready Or Not, was released in 1987 and contained the hit "Midnight Blue."

Gramm left Foreigner in 1990 but returned to the fold two years later. In 1997, he developed a brain tumor and underwent surgery to remove it. He continued with Foreigner for a few more years, but in the mid-'00s, the band moved on without him, releasing an album in 2009 with new lead singer Kelly Hansen.
  • The co-producer on this album was one of the two big players in music named "Peter Wolf." This was of course the Austrian, Grammy-awarded producer Peter Wolf, not to be confused with the guy from the J. Geils Band. This Peter Wolf was also the keyboard artist who worked alongside the likes of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart.
