Songfacts®:

  • "There's gonna be some hurtin' tonight."

On this track, Mike Reno is singing about one partner in a relationship getting a comeuppance. The song started off as an instrumental written by Pat Benatar's touring bass player Mick Mahan and the Nashville songwriter Gregg Montante. They composed it thinking it would be used as theme music for a sporting event, so when Loverboy guitarist Paul Dean heard the track, he tried to turn it into a sports anthem. Said Dean: "The idea was to create an anthem for the home crowd to sing about putting a hurtin' on the other team. Instead, it transformed into a song about a relationship gone awry, and the inevitability of a conversation turning bad, leading to "Some hurtin' tonight.'"
