  • Originally marketed as a country artist, Lyle Lovett quickly outgrew the genre, adding jazz, gospel, and pop to his records.
  • He was born and raised in Klein, Texas. It's a small town outside of Houston that was named after Lovett's great-grandfather, Adam Klein.
  • He began writing and performing songs while attending Texas A&M University in the late 1970's. He majored in German and journalism.
  • Lyle has appeared in numerous films, beginning in 1983 with his role as a singer in Mickey Rooney's TV movie, Bill: On His Own. He has since appeared in The Player (1992), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), and The Opposite of Sex (1998), among others. He has also guested on such TV shows as Dharma & Greg and Mad About You.
  • He was married to actress Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman, Erin Brokovich) from June 1993 to March 1995. They met while shooting the movie The Player.
  • He has won four Grammy Awards, including 1989 Best Country Vocal Performance, Male for Lyle Lovett And His Large Band, and 1996 Best Country Album for The Road to Ensenada.
  • In March 2002, he was trampled by a bull on his ranch near Houston. The bull broke Lyle's leg in 20 places, but Lovett categorized the incident as "just one of those things."
  • He spoke as a representative of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) to the House Subcommittee on Music on the Internet to advocate increased copyright laws to help protect songwriters from Internet piracy.
  • Lyle is really into motorcycles. One of his first jobs was at The Cycle Shack in his teens. He got his first motorcycle - a Honda - at age 11.
