Songfacts®:

  • The lyric is delivered from the perspective of an adolescent goth who is an outcast at school and feels most at home in the town's cemetery. Frontman Anthony Gonzalez told Q magazine: "I've never been a goth person, but when I was 14 or 15 at high school, I truly found myself, because I got into this group of people - goths, punks, skateboarders - and we went everywhere together.

We were so close. We got a bad reputation because we used to hang out with homeless people, and gather in the plaza of Antibes, smoking joints and drinking beer after school, and spend Saturdays in graveyards or on the beach. And it's a bad look, when I think about it. What the f--k were we thinking? But everything was a journey. We walked like a gang. And the girl in Graveyard Girl could have been a friend of mine. I'm trying, through music, to make imaginary friends."
  • The website Treble named this as their Top Song of 2008.
