Songfacts®:

  • Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller's first entry on the Hot 100 was this cut from his sixth mixtape Best Day Ever. It peaked at #79 and racked up over 20 million plays on YouTube, an impressive feat for a song that didn't receive major radio airplay.
  • The song title references Donald Trump, at the time known as a business magnate who became a national celebrity through hosting the NBC reality show The Apprentice. Trump acknowledged the tune and its video on his own YouTube clip. "A lot of people are calling me about the Mac Miller rap song," Trump explained. "It's named 'Donald Trump.' Maybe he should pay me a lotta money, but it just hit over 20 million. 20 million people tuning into Mac Miller!" Trump continued, admitting that he hadn't actually heard the song. "I haven't actually seen the language, it's a little bit hard to understand on the song itself," he said. "Probably it's not the cleanest language we've ever heard, but this kid is the new Eminem, everybody says he's fantastic."
  • Trump was initially supportive of Miller using his name for the song, but in early 2013 he changed his tune. "Little @MacMiller, you illegally used my name for your song 'Donald Trump' which now has over 75 million hits," Trump tweeted. He continued: "Little @MacMiller, I want the money not the plaque you gave me!"
  • This song got a little surreal when Donald Trump successfully ran for president in 2016. Miller, like many in the entertainment industry, was against him.

"He was, like, a symbol of money when I was younger," Miller told Rolling Stone. "Now he's just a symbol of, like, 'Hell No!'"

The rapper added that the song "Has never been an ode to him."

Miller kept playing the song, but often with an obscene introduction: "F--k Donald Trump."
  • In 2016, President Barack Obama's daughter Malia was seen dancing to this song when Miller played it at Lollapalooza.
