Songfacts®:

  • Madonna wrote this slow jam with Prince and recorded it at the Purple Legend's Paisley Park Studio. The duet was the sole product of a much-discussed musical by the pair. Madonna recalled: "We were friends and talked about working together, so I went to Minneapolis to write some stuff with him, but the only thing I really dug was 'Love Song.'"

"We ended up writing it long-distance, because I had to be in L.A. and he couldn't leave Minneapolis, and quite frankly I couldn't stand Minneapolis. When I went there, it was like 20 degrees below zero, and it was really desolate. I was miserable and I couldn't write or work under those circumstances."
  • According to Paul Zollo's book Songwriters On Songwriting, Prince played the guitar on a trio of other songs on the Like a Prayer album, the title track, "Keep It Together," and "Act of Contrition." He remained uncredited on all three.
  • Madonna later suggested to Prince that they do a joint series of concerts under the banner of the Royalty Tour... The Queen and The Prince. However, Prince turned down the idea saying: "The world isn't ready for this, it's too big."
