Songfacts®:

  • Mamma Mia! is an Italian exclamation that expresses surprise, joy, fear, disappointment, or exasperation. Literally meaning "My Mother," its English equivalent is "Oh my goodness!" or "Wow!" The Italians have been using the phrase for years, but it was ABBA that made mamma mia popular worldwide.

Måneskin titled this song "Mammamia" both to poke fun at the Italian stereotype and capture reactions to rumors about the band. Måneskin frontman Damiano David explained that after the foursome won the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, they suddenly got a lot of attention, and along with it, a lot of criticism.

"I wanted to translate that into the lyrics, because it happens a lot," David said. "Maybe you're doing something that you feel is great, but people don't understand it and make bad judgments and bad comments about it. I wanted to make fun of that situation."
  • One lyric makes reference to a green room segment in the Eurovision final when some online viewers on social media claimed they saw David snorting a line of cocaine. The organizers later confirmed the accusation to be false following an inquiry.

They wanna arrest me, but I was just having fun
I swear that I'm not drunk and I'm not taking drugs
  • Manneskin wrote the song soon after winning Eurovision 2021. They only had a few days to come up with new music in the studio but came out with "Mammamia" in a few hours. "We didn't take it too seriously," bassist Victoria de Angelis said. "It's a very silly, careless song and we've never done something like that before. It came together very naturally. We just tried to have fun and enjoy it."
  • Måneskin played this song when they made their US network television debut on the October 26, 2021 episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The Italian rockers also performed their cover of "Beggin'."
  • The violent Rei Nadal-directed video finds the other members of the band individually plotting the murder of frontman Damiano David during a house party.
