Songfacts®:

  • Formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds, this is the first release by Marina Diamandis under her shortened moniker of Marina. She explained that "It took me well over a year to figure out that a lot of my identity was tied up in who I was as an artist... and there wasn't much left of who I was." The song was her first single as a solo lead artist since "Blue" in 2015.
  • The melodramatic pop number finds Diamandis shedding her past and finding salvation in her new identity.

In this handmade heaven, I come alive
    Bluebirds forever, color the sky
In this handmade heaven, we forget the time
'Cause birds of a feather fly together

According to a press release the song finds Marina imagining "a world as simple as the beautiful creatures and nature that surround her."
  • Written solely by Marina, the song was produced by Lorde and Sam Smith collaborator Joel Little. The New Zealand producer creates a hymnal effect throughout the verses, by layering Marina's vocals so that they serve as her own personal choir.
  • The music video was directed by Sophie Muller and filmed in Tallinn, Estonia. It features Marina traveling across a snowy landscape while wearing red lipstick and clad in a red puffer.
