Songfacts®:

  • "To Be Human" is the most political song on Marina's Love + Fear album. It finds the singer analyzing humanity's flaws and the way cultural differences can cause division. She talks about how we should be united by the fact that we all go through human experience.

All the people living in, living in the world today
We're united by our love, we're united by our pain
All the things that I've done and I've seen
Still, I don't know, don't know what it means

Marina said in a video that when she was writing this song her intention was create a picture of humanity. "In our political climate we are constantly being made to see other people as 'other,'" she explained. "If you're from a different culture, you're seen as different and potentially dangerous."

Marina feels this is a sad way to see humanity.
  • Speaking about the song with Billboard, Marina said she feels it's important we are all engaged in a wider discussion about women's issues. "It's not just about spreading your own word, but about planting seeds in people's minds," she explained. "We all need to be challenged in different ways, and if no one presents different ideas to us, how are we meant to grow and learn?"

  • KloeyThis song reminds me of 9/11 and the attack on Ukraine. "There were riots in America just when things were getting better" reminds me of both events. Ukraine didn't sign the treaty in time, so Russia attacked. America has lots of power, so Russians flew the planes into the twin towers.
"We're united by our love, we're united by our pain" basically tells how when New York was attacked, everyone wanted to blame anyone who looked or talked differently. Now we realize that these events unite us even more. And we grow even more powerful because of this.
