Songfacts®:

  • Charlie Puth wrote this song with Jacob Kasher (Maroon 5's "Sugar," Charlie Puth's "Attention") and Julia Michaels (Justin Bieber's "Sorry," Selena Gomez's "Good For You") at Conway Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California. Jason Evigan ("Demi Lovato's "Heart Attack") helped the "Attention" singer finish the production. Puth told Billboard he was thinking of "a Chris Isaak vibe."
  • Puth's production of this song was one of the first times that he had met Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. He told Billboard:

"Him and I are like, buddy-buddy now, but that was like a week of knowing each other, so it was still very… you know, when you know you're going to be friends with somebody, but you're very careful with what you say around them? I was like, 'Adam... maybe you want to re-sing that one part... if you want to?' Now I'd be like, "F--k you, that was horrible! You're the worst singer ever!"
  • Charlie Puth admitted that he originally wanted to keep it quiet that he co-wrote this intimate track. "I like to see people react to the music, and sometimes if my name's attached to it, they feel like they feel have to feel a certain way," he said. "But it leaked that I wrote on the album, which is totally cool."
