Songfacts®:

  • This is the title song from the 1979 musical Tell Me on a Sunday, which was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black. The duo chose Marti Webb, who had previously replaced Elaine Page in Evita, to front the project.
  • Radio Times magazine asked lyricist Don Black to choose the favorite lyric of his own compositions. He chose this song explaining, "the lyric does what it's supposed to; it's touching and heartbreaking, and right away, you know where you're at: 'Don't write a letter when you want to leave/ Don't call me at 3am from a friend's apartment/ I'd like to choose how I hear the news.' When I'm asked what I look for in a song, I say, to recognize myself in it. After Tell Me on a Sunday, people told me 'I felt that,' and that's what you want to hear."
  • Tell Me on a Sunday was Lloyd Webber's first project after his split with Tim Rice.
