Songfacts®:

  • The original title was "Sanctified Pussy" which was Mr. Gaye's way of saying he needed "a good ol' church girl." Released posthumously in 1985 on the Dream of a Lifetime album, the title was amended to "Sanctified Lady" and new background vocals and instruments were added to cover up certain lyrics. The song became a #2 R&B hit. >>

  • This wasn't Marvin's first use of the word "Sanctified," which means something that has been made holy or consecrated. In his hit "Let's Get It On," he sings, "Do you know I mean it? I've been sanctified."

If I'm not mistaken, MG's original version used that very term ("P" Word) but it was dubbed out. I do recall the actual word being used at the very end of the song?
