Songfacts®:

  • During her two-year stint with Jubilee Records, Mary Wells and her then-husband Cecil Womack penned what would be her last pop hit, "The Doctor." It reached #65 on the Billboard Pop chart and #22 on the Billboard R&B chart.
  • As the lead single from 1968's Servin' Up Some Soul, this song was a promising start to Wells' debut album with Jubilee. Unfortunately, the album and its 13 other songs failed to chart and set the course for a downward spiral that led to the cancellation of a second album.
