Who Hurt You?

Songfacts®:

  • "Who Hurt You?" is Megan Moroney's scorched-earth breakup song. The premise is simple: a man love-bombs, lies, feeds his ego on her compliments, and exits stage left with someone younger on his arm. But instead of merely asking, "Why'd you do me wrong?" Moroney flips it. Who hurt you so badly that you now treat other people's hearts like rental cars?
  • The song sits on Moroney's third album, Cloud 9, as a classic example of how she uses detail as a weapon. "I think the most specific songs are the most relatable," she told Variety.

On "Who Hurt You?" that approach turns what could have been a vague breakup track into a point-by-point case file, right down to the 21-year-old on his arm and the way he needs constant ego-stroking to feel like a good guy.
  • Some fans interpreted the song as a diss track targeting Riley Green, as rumors linked Moroney to Green in late 2024 and early 2025. Both denied the romance, but the opening lyrics that nod to The Charlie Daniel Band's gothic classic suggest otherwise:

The devil went down to Georgia
Then he crossed the 'Bama line

Moroney is from Georgia; Green is from Alabama.

Two more Cloud 9 tracks seem to mime Moroney's rumored romance with Green. "Wish I Didn't" contains a lyric that possibly nods to Green's well-known cowboy boot aesthetic, and "Waiting on the Rain" potentially references Green's "Make It Rain," a song he released in August 2025. Taylor Swift built an empire on less.
  • Adding to the soap-opera timing, a few days after Cloud 9 dropped, Green posted a video performing a song called "Pos Like Me," widely interpreted by fans as a rebuttal to someone dragging his name through the mud. He never mentioned Moroney, but he didn't need to. In country music, subtext travels faster than the devil crossing state lines.
  • In a conversation on Kenny Chesney's No Shoes Radio, Moroney described "Who Hurt You?" as an example of how she uses songwriting therapeutically, saying she was "so hurt and angry" by the situation that she had to "bottle up these feelings" and "create it into art and then give it away" so the pain "wasn't for nothing."

During the same interview Moroney also talked about wanting to "scream the bridge" because of how angry she still feels when she thinks about the 21-year-old on his arm and his need for constant ego-feeding.
  • Megan Moroney wrote the song with Jessie Jo Dillon (Cole Swindell's "Break Up In The End," Dan + Shay's "10,000 Hours") and Luke Laird (Carrie Underwood's "So Small," Little Big Town's "Pontoon"). The same trio were behind Moroney's 2024 single "Am I Okay?" and several other Cloud 9 tracks. All the songs share that mix of sharp detail and big, sing-along choruses.
  • Moroney's regular producer Kristian Bush produced the track. He also played the organ, electric piano, Mellotron and synthesizer.

    The other musicians are:
    Travis McNabb: drums
    Ted Pecchio: bass
Justin Schipper: acoustic guitar and steel guitar
Benji Shanks: electric and baritone guitar
