Songfacts®:

  • "Girls In The Hood" is an explicit ode to the South Park neighborhood in Houston where Megan Thee Stallion grew up. Channeling Eazy-E's "Boyz-n-the Hood," the song finds an assertive Megan rapping about seducing her female haters' boyfriends and boasting of her lavish lifestyle. Rather than apologizing for how she lives, she celebrates her culture, blackness and come-up. The Texan MC described the track as the 2020 version of her 2019 hit "Hot Girl Summer."
  • Megan uses the title phrase just once, in the third verse when she points out that "girls in the hood are always hard." She follows up the statement by talking about how she started writing raps at 16 with the aim of getting rich.
  • The song samples the distinctive synth loop from "Boyz-N-The Hood (Remix)." Eazy-E's track became a belated hit when the song reached #50 on the US Hot 100 in 2015 following the release of the N.W.A biopic film Straight Outta Compton. Other artists that have sampled the classic hip-hop track's beat include UGK ("Front, Back & Side to Side") and Jim Jones ("Certified Gangsters").
  • This is the second time Megan sampled a hip-hop classic recorded by a male and flipped it to the girl version. Her single "B.I.T.C.H" was based on 2Pac's All Eyez On Me track "Ratha Be Ya Ni--a."
  • American producer Scott Storch came up with the trap-based beat with Eminem collaborator Illadaproducer. Megan Thee Stallion and Bobby Sessions are credited as co-writers along with "Boyz-n-the Hood" writers Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre.
