• Melanie Safka, better known simply as Melanie, was an American singer-songwriter whose career stretched over five decades. While "Brand New Key" remains her most widely recognized song, her legacy extends far beyond that catchy earworm.
• Born in Queens, New York, in 1947, Melanie started performing at a young age and garnered attention for her unique folk-pop style and whimsical lyrics.
• She began singing in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village in the mid-'60s before signing with Columbia Records. Her two singles with the label failed to crack the charts.
• Signing with Buddah Records, Melanie topped the French charts in 1969 with "Bo Bo's Party."
• Melanie was one of only three female solo artists to perform at the original Woodstock festival in 1969, alongside Janis Joplin and Joan Baez. This pivotal experience would later inspire her international breakout hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" the following year, with the song peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was inspired by the Woodstock audience, who lit candles while Melanie was performing on stage.
• Melanie founded her own record label, Neighborhood Records, with her producer husband, Peter Schekeryk, in 1971. Its biggest hit was "Brand New Key," which spent three weeks at #1 in the US.
• She won an Emmy Award in 1989 for writing the lyrics to "The First Time I Loved Forever," the theme song for the TV series Beauty and the Beast.
• Melanie was an ardent animal rights advocate. She was a vegetarian for several years in the early 1970s.
• Her music often explored spiritual themes, and she had a deep interest in yoga and meditation. She had a life-altering experience in 2006 with the Indian Hindu spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi that inspired her to write the song "Motherhood Of Love."
• Melanie died at 76 on January 23, 2024. She is remembered as one of the most influential and unique voices of her generation.
