Songfacts®:

  • One of the most popular Meshuggah tracks, "New Millennium Cyanide Christ" has lyrics by their drummer, Tomas Haake, and music by guitarists Mårten Hagström and Fredrik Thordendal. The lyric is rather complex and unusual, as Haake, whose first language is Swedish, put together phrases like "carnal, organic anagram" and "incandescent revelations in a world of darkened forms."

So what's going on in the song? In our interview with Haake, he explained: "That's more of a dystopian take on a sectistic or extremist kind of cult vibe. I remember the inspiration came from suicide cults and stuff like that where you have one leader that can take hundreds of people and just brainwash them and make them think he's Christ or the savior."
  • The video is a low-budget but effective production, shot on the band's tour bus as they perform as an air band, with Jens Kidman singing into a pen. Meshuggah isn't the first band to play air instruments in a video: Journey did it in their clip for "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)."
