Songfacts®:

  • This is one of two new tracks dropped by Mick Jagger in July 2017, which were inspired by the UK's political issues. The Rolling Stones frontman wrote the songs in April 2017 and said he wanted to release them straight away.
  • Jagger said this song is "ostensibly" about seeing England lose in the football, but the title gave it a wider importance. "It's about a feeling that we are in a difficult moment in our history," he explained. "That's how I was feeling when I was writing."
  • This song features grime artist Skepta. Jagger said when he was writing the track, he knew he wanted a British rapper on it. "Skepta stepped in at a moment's notice," he added, "and I just loved what he did."
  • The video, which was directed by Saam Farahmand, shows Hollywood actor Luke Evans running through a dilapidated 21st century Britain. Evans played Gaston in Disney's 2017 live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.
