Songfacts®:

  • Migos introduce their Culture III album with this nostalgic track. All three members take turns spitting verses over a sample of The Temptations' 1972 hit tune, "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone."
  • Each of the trio reminisces on their upbringings while boasting about their wealth and success. The title comes from Takeoff's verse where he flexes about his diamond jewelry collection.

  • Quavo kicks things off by acknowledging The Temptations sample:

Woo, Papa was a rollin' stone, but now I got rollin' stones in the bezel

Quavo said in the song's music video: "The term rolling stone relates to me because we just felt like we the Rolling Stones, we the greatest group in the world. We the foundation to our family. We never had no pops, so we feel like we our three fathers and we the big dogs."
  • Quavo created the beat with Migos' official DJ and recording engineer, DJ Durel. Quavo told Audacy's Greg Street they chose the classic soul sample as they were feeling cultural and wanted to put their twist on something that was hot back in the day. "We went and grabbed 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone,'" he said. "My boy [DJ] Durel cooked it up in the studio and we put that Migos touch on there. We feel like we can rap on any beat."
  • The song's music video finds the trap trio performing the song with a live band while clad in matching three-piece black suits and top hats. Offset told Billboard: "That was such a beautiful performance to show the uniqueness, spark, and drip. That was with the live band and vocals lined up. We just went grown man and suits and pulled up with that '50s Rolls-Royce. That was for the culture and gave back that Temptations-Migos vibe to cross both worlds."
