Songfacts®:

  • The Migos trio grew up together in Gwinnett County, a mostly suburban area one hour northeast of Atlanta. The three of them are related: Offset and Quavo are cousins and Quavo's sister is Takeoff's mother. They have remained close from an early age and have formed their own gang doing everything together. Takeoff reps their gang mentality during this song's hook.

  • The beat was originally created by British producer Kurtis McKenzie, also known as The Arcade. McKenzie has a wide ranging resume having worked with pop acts like Maroon 5 ("Don't Wanna Know"), hip hop artists such as Jidenna ("Classic Man") and pop-rappers such as Iggy Azalea ("Fancy").
  • McKenzie's instrumentation features a vocal sample taken from a song he did with pop singer Julia Michaels in around 2015. He told Genius. "The sample was from the bridge section and I really loved the melody, and I always planned on using it in a track or a beat."

"After the chopped vocal, I added the same bass line from the verse, but I've just switched the sound to a slightly more aggressive bass sound," McKenzie added. "I just wanted to make sure there was some sort of switch out between the two basses. It's exactly the same bass line, but it adds a bit more bite to the track."

McKenzie then linked up with Canadian producer Murda Beatz, who is a frequent collaborator of both Migos ("MotorSport") and Drake ("Nice For What"). "He came down to my studio," the Brit recalled. "I actually played it by mistake and he heard it and then said, 'What was that?' So I pulled it up and he added his percussion and his hats and stuff, and his kicks. I really liked it. I liked what he was doing. It sounded cool. We kept it very simple. 9 months later, I got a text from him saying we were on the Migos album."
