Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Mike Posner takes on a six-month love affair that has ended. He'd love to get her off his mind, but she's always there:

I don't wanna write no song about you
But you show up in everything that I do

Instead of letting it go, he confronts it head-on in this song, covering the joy and pain of the breakup.
  • This is the first single from Posner's first album since At Night, Alone in 2016. They were a rough two years for him, as not only did he contend with the breakup, but on January 11, 2017 his father died. He was also pained by the death of Avicii on April 20, 2018.
  • Posner typically uses intricate wordplay in his lyrics, but he chose a straightforward route here. "This one is just fun, like, not rhyming and just saying exactly how I felt," he told Zane Lowe of Beats 1. "It just came out of loss."
  • Posner sees this song as a kind of therapy. "It was good to make this song because of all the angst that was inside me," he said. "What do you do with that angst? I put it in a song. Then I don't have to throw it on another human or on myself."

He added: "You can only hope someone feels a sense of beauty or connection out of your suffering - that's the highest goal as an artist."
  • Posner wrote this song with Dan Wilson and Ricky Reed, who also co-produced the track. Reed's credits include Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" and Pitbull's "Fireball"; Wilson is the frontman of Semisonic and co-wrote Adele's "Someone Like You."
