Songfacts®:

  • Andrew Roachford ("Cuddly Toy (Feel For Me)") and Tim Howar were the lead vocalists for this iteration of Mike + The Mechanics. Roachford sang lead on "Save My Soul," which finds him looking for something he can believe in. There is a lot of biblical imagery in the song, along with a theme of redemption. "Traveled south to wash my sins away," the song begins.
  • Roachford wrote this song with head Mechanic Mike Rutherford and Fraser T Smith, a longtime friend of Rutherford's who has produced tracks for Rick Wakeman, Craig David, Britney Spears, Lily Allen and many others.
  • Roachford sings:

Gave my child a gun to see what he could do
Shot them down with a dirty shade of blue

"I thought some might complain," Mike Rutherford said in a Songfacts interview. "That line is about how what kids are exposed to now is ridiculous. It's not a real gun.

The knowledge they have so young and the confidence kids have now is just crazy to me. When I was growing up and my kids were growing up, they were much more insulated to things, and I think it's not a bad thing. Everything now is so available, it's hard to avoid it. Young kids, I think they get too much information too soon."
