Songfacts®:

  • This song is a duet between Mini Mansions frontman Michael Shuman and Alison Mosshart. The Kills' and Dead Weather singer said that when Shuman sent her "Hey Lover" and asked if she wanted to sing on it, she "was stoked."

Mosshart explained what she loves about "Hey Lover" is everybody, including herself, have had "this realistic lyrical conversation many times." She added that "it's never sounded so beautiful. Usually it's more of a gutter punk song. A lot of screaming and breaking things. Mini Mansions make foul play sound elegant."

Keyboardist Tyler Parkford and bassist Zach Dawes also make brief appearances in the studio. Mosshart said her part in the clip took an hour to film plus "two cigarettes and half a bottle of wine (old school)."
