Songfacts®:

  • Miranda Lambert debuted this song during her intimate acoustic show at Nashville's City Winery on January 20, 2016. The tune was written in the early 2000s by Scotty Wray, the singer's longtime guitarist. Wray also co-penned "I Wanna Die," a track from Miranda's debut album, Kerosene, the Four The Record song "Easy Living" and the Platinum tune "Gravity Is a Bitch."
  • In a reference to her 2015 divorce from Blake Shelton, Lambert told the audience that Wray has been playing the song for her for years, but "I was never damaged enough to sing a song called 'Scars' - until now."

"We both had, like, a really, really s---ty year in 2015," she added. "But we're moving forward."
  • Collin Raye, the brother of Scotty Wray, recorded the song as the title track of his 2020 album. His version features Miranda Lambert on harmony vocals.
