  • "Heaven" is a misty ballad that captures the everyday charm of sharing a life under one roof. Mitski's vocals carry the tale of discovering joy within the arms of a lover yet acknowledging the fragile nature of their union.

    Your low warm voice
Curses as you find the string
    To strike within me
    That rings out a note
    Heard in heaven

The relationship isn't without its flaws - her partner's words striking chords within her - yet these verbal clashes seem to echo even in heavenly realms. Perhaps this suggests that the pain serves as a testament to the profound and genuine depth of love's emotions.
  • On the next verse, the scene takes a brighter hue as Mitski sketches a portrait of serene harmony.

Now I bend like a willow
    Thinking of you
    Like a murmuring' brook
    Curvin' about you

Drawing from nature's embrace, Mitski portrays a deep bond, a union of heart and soul.

She relishes the lingering taste of coffee, a cup her partner set aside, a sip that becomes a memory of them.

As I sip on the rest of the coffee you left
    A kiss left of you
  • In the last verse, Mitski faces an impending shadow that remains unnamed. The impending trouble races forward, much like an aimless storm.

    Hear the storm
    Dances outside

Amid the romantic theme of the song, an undercurrent of unease takes hold; whatever they've nurtured might meet a challenge once they venture beyond their haven. The future's shrouded, unclear, a mystery.

    And the dark awaits us
    All around the corner
    But here in our place
    We have for the day

So can they hold tight and soak up those precious pockets of solitude, wrapped up in the warmth of togetherness and the comfort of their shared domestic heaven?
  • Mitski debuted "Heaven" on BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds on August 23, 2023, accompanied by an interview with presenter Jack Saunders. "For 'Heaven,' the feeling I wanted to portray was romance," Mitski told Saunders: "I think it's a classically romantic song. It's about wanting to cherish the little time you have with the person you love, especially because the world outside can be quite terrible and hard sometimes. So it's a song about let's leave the world outside of our room for now. And enjoy this, this beautiful love we have."
  • The song is an old-school country ballad seasoned with pockets of orchestral grandeur under the baton of Drew Erickson (Lana Del Rey, Weyes Blood).

"We recorded the orchestral bits at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, California," said Mitski. "And a lot of the players we've got our people who usually play on Disney soundtracks, like you know big guns who are really good at that sound. And we somehow got them through our orchestrator and Drew Erickson and the band. And my vocals were recorded in Nashville, because we also wanted a sort of like, really good Nashville band."
