Songfacts®:

  • This is the first single from Carry Me, Rosie, the second album by the Reno-based blues rockers Moondog Matinee. It was written by their bass player Adam Carpenter, who told us the story behind the song:

"The sound of 'Last Night the Devil Learned My Name' is indicative of the part of our hometown the song is inspired by. It's an homage to a particularly gritty part of Reno, legendary among locals for some of the particular characters and businesses that reside there.

Not only did we want a song to represent the overall mood of this particular part of town, but we also wanted a song on Carry Me, Rosie, that would allow us to delve into some darker themes than we'd previously explored. Though it was written about a specific place for us, we believe that the song contains common elements that most people, especially city dwellers, can relate to."
