Songfacts®:

  • "Wasted On You" is a heartbreak ballad where Morgan Wallen reflects on how he can't get over his ex. The double entendre title references both the bourbon he is knocking back to dull his emotional discomfort and the time and money he wasted on a relationship that didn't work out.
  • There is also a third meaning to the title as Wallen makes clear the breakup is his fault, and it's not the first time he's blown a romance.

My heart wouldn't listen to my head and these boots on my feet
Looks like I'm learning the hard way again
    That's why I've been
    Wasted on you

Wallen's lover was too good for him and he was "wasted" on her.
  • Wallen co-wrote this song with Josh Thompson, Ernest K. Smith, and Ryan Vojtesa. When he teased the soulful ballad in mid-2020, the country star asked fans if he should include it on his second album. He received an unanimous "yes."
  • Morgan Wallen moved to Nashville in 2015 after competing on The Voice. He started hanging out with Katie Smith in 2017, and over the next few years they got involved in an on-and-off relationship, at one stage getting engaged. Smith gave birth to their baby boy, Indie, in July 2020, by which time they had broken up. Some fans believe she is the ex that Wallen is addressing in this song.
  • This is the second track on Morgan Wallen's Dangerous album. The first half of the record shows the country bad boy's softer side as Wallen takes on failed relationships; the second part is more about his rowdy, party persona.
  • When this song landed at #1 on the Country chart in its first week, Wallen became the first artist with multiple #1 debuts in the tally's history - "7 Summers" previously debuted at the summit.
  • "Wasted On You" returned to the Hot 100 15 months later after Wallen released it as the fourth single from Dangerous: The Double Album.
