Songfacts®:

  • Mura Masa is the stage name of British electronic musician Alex Crossan, who describes his sound as a genre-defying "lo-fi oriental-influenced beat music". He is named after Japanese sword-smith Muramasa Sengo.
  • This song is a collaboration with New York rapper with Desiigner. It was actually the first time the pair had met in person, Speaking with BBC Radio 1's MistaJam's Mura Masa explained how the collaboration came about:

"I was in L.A. and I was working across from Kendrick in the Interscope Studios. He was working on DAMN. in the studio … and suddenly the message comes from Desiigner, 'Send the beat, send the beat now! Just send it'' so I was like, 'OK'. I had that beat lying around for a while; I was saving it for someone like Desiigner."
  • Mura Musa told Complex how the track ended up completely different to Desiigner's first version:

"I like to think I pulled a very good song out of him. Originally we sent him the beat and he kind of sent it back. I think he thought it was an EDM thing and he sort of had to do ad-libs over it. There were no verses. There were no lyrics. It was just him (mimics Desiigner ad-libbing 'git! git! ooa! ooa! git! git! git! git! ooa!'). I kind of had to dialogue with him, just carefully kind of persuade him in a traditional structure that he doesn't really do."
