Songfacts®:

  • Singer-songwriter Natalie Janowski, known professionally as Natalie Jane, is a singer-songwriter from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. She first gained recognition as a contestant on season 18 of American Idol when she progressed to the showcase round. Following her elimination, she signed to 10K Projects and released several singles, including "Mentally Cheating" and "Seven." This fiery jilted-lover anthem is her first charting hit.
  • Natalie Jane narrates her pain after Ava's name repeatedly pops up on her lover's phone. The singer had never heard of Ava, but she pieces the specifics of her boyfriend's cheating throughout the dark and abrasive song.

    Thought that I was dumb
When you asked me to go blonde
'Cause I knew that's what you wanted

Her cheating partner wanted her to change her hair color. Now Natalie Jane realizes it was so she'd look like Ava.

So why is there a red heart next to her name?

There's a red heart emoji next to Ava's name on his phone. The emoji is a Snapchat reference meaning they're best friends for two weeks straight. (Snapchat considers a "best friend" to be someone with whom you've exchanged the greatest number of snaps).
  • As the song progresses, Natalie-Jane continues to question her romantic partner about the girl on his phone. He can't explain, which furthers her suspicions that he's having an affair with the shadowy Ava.
  • Natalie Jane wrote "Ava" with Geena Fontanella, James Miller Gulielmetti, and the song's producer, Doc Daniel. Gulielmetti and Daniel also collaborated with the New Jersey native on "Mentally Cheating" and "Seven."
