Songfacts®:

  • As Natalie Prass was writing her songs in 2016 and 2017 for her The Future and the Past album, Donald Trump was being elected the 45th President of the United States. Shocked and dismayed that the American people had voted for a man with such divisive views, this song emerged from her raw emotions. She explained to Consequence of Sound: "It was a lot to handle and feeling like my life was changing and the country was changing and the world was changing really quickly."

Prass was sharing a small rehearsal space with some "metal dudes" at the time and for a while she would go there in the morning before the metal musicians arrived so that she could "read, write, play piano for a little bit, and cry." She added: "I felt like it was my responsibility to try and put some positive energy into the world and talk about things that were very real. The only thing that was hard about it was convincing the label I was with at the time that it was a good idea, because they were not into it at all."
