Songfacts®:

  • This was the hardest track to record for Grand Romantic as producers Jeff Bhasker and Emile Haynie weren't enthusiastic about the song that Ruess was describing. "We didn't work on it often," the singer said. "However, after a couple of months of my persistence, they got into it, and now it's one of our favorites."
  • The song is similarly titled to a classic Doors number. "I figured we needed a song with pace, and so I just randomly came up with that song," Ruess told Rolling Stone. "I don't know why I sang 'You light my fire;' it was kind of funny."

"Jeff's first thought was 'We can't do this! That's the Doors' lyric,'" he continued. "I had never really listened to the Doors before, so I was like 'Ah, sure we can! People have lit a fire before. I'm sure it's not big deal.' I made sure to reference the Doors in the lyrics. I thought it'd be nice to give a little shout out and acknowledge their lyric."
