Songfacts®:

  • This is the first single by American R&B artist Ne-Yo, from his fourth studio album, Libra Scale. It was written by Ne-Yo and produced by Stargate with the help of French producer Sandy V.
  • The up-tempo track premiered on May 25, 2010, and was made available as a Digital Download on June 1, 2010.
  • The song's music video connects to the overall story that Ne-Yo tells throughout the Libra Scale album. "'Beautiful Monster,' in a nutshell, represents the love interest/ archnemesis in the story [of] Libra Scale, which the entire album is based off of," the singer told MTV News.
He added: " 'Beautiful Monster' is one piece of a very long and intricate story. When you see the first video, make sure that you're paying attention because all of the videos tell a story. So pay attention - you don't want to miss nothing."
  • This topped the UK singles chart in 2010, keeping up Ne-Yo's habit of bi-annual British chart-toppers. His previous #1s were "So Sick" in 2006 and "Closer" in 2008.
  • Libra Scale is a concept album that tells the story of three garbage men, Jerome, Clyde and Leroy, who are granted everything they could ever want including superpowers. However, there's a catch: they can never fall in love. When Jerome falls for vivacious no-nonsense stunner Pretti Sinclair, she contracts a strain of his super-powers and suffers an adverse reaction that effectively drives her crazy. She is transformed into 'Diamond Eye,' a monster who sets about destroying the Gotham-like city. In this song, Jerome sings about his continuing attraction to Pretti despite her transformation -"She's a monster, beautiful monster, beautiful monster, but I don't mind / And I need her, said I need her."
