Songfacts®:

  • This song is about someone so jaded about relationships that they now feel that love is fairly absurd. It includes the line, "In the end I was the mean girl, or somebody's in between girl. Now it's the Devil I love. And that's as funny as real love." Clearly missing the actual meaning of the line, this upset some fundamentalist groups. >>>

  • Neko Case wrote this with Canadian band The Sadies while they were making the 2004 collaborative album The Tigers Have Spoken. However, at that stage she didn't feel it was quite ready to be performed live.
  • Case told Uncut in 2015: "I still think it might be one of the best songs I've written. It's not so much about being a lone wolf as it is, 'I don't want that like that.' But it doesn't go on to tell you how you need it."
