Songfacts®:

  • This is the first single by American alternative rock band Neon Trees from their sophomore album Picture Show. The single was released to Alternative Radio on December 7, 2011 and made available to digital retailers via Mercury Records on December 20, 2011.
  • The catchy Pop number has an early '60s feel, which frontman Tyler Glenn told Rolling Stone is indicative of what the band was listening to at the time. "We fell in love with a lot of like Roy Orbison and the Motown music that my dad listens to," he said.
  • The entire album was produced by American musician Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who is also known for his work as a bassist with such acts as Beck and Nine Inch Nails.
  • For those of you familiar with the movie Midnight Cowboy, this is an entirely different song to the similarly titled Harry Nilsson hit from its soundtrack.
  • Wonder why Tyler Glenn coughs at the beginning of the song? He explained to KROQ radio: "The beginning of 'Everybody Talks' was inspired by the Bowie song, 'Let's Dance.' And I accidentally coughed in the rough take of that vocal. Now it's all over. Whoops."
  • The song's music video features the band watching a movie at a drive in called Zombie Bikers From Hell.
