  • Nessa Barrett first rose to prominence on TikTok in 2019. After getting a positive response to the songs she wrote and sang on the video-sharing app, it was a natural step for her to transition into making music. After signing with Warner Brothers, Barrett released the pop ballad "Pain" as her debut single in July 2020. "I Hope Ur Miserable Until Ur Dead" earned Barrett her first entry on the Hot 100 in August 2021.
  • The pop-rock anthem finds Barrett venting towards somebody who's ripped her world to pieces (most likely a lover who cheated on her). Having made her miserable, she's hoping karma catches up with them and they feel the same pain she has felt. "'I Hope Ur Miserable Until Ur Dead' is the anger you hold inside when people betray you," said Barrett. "When people hurt you so bad and you unapologetically hope they get what they deserve."
  • This was written by:

The song's producer, Evan Blair. The Toronto native's other credits include "Teddy Bear" by Dreamers and "D2B" by Max Styler. He also produced Barrett's "Counting Crimes" single.

Imagine Dragons producer Tim Randolph. His work for the Las Vegas rock band includes "I'll Make It Up To You" and their singer Dan Reynolds' collaboration with Yungblud, "Original Me."

Samuel Mark Catalano and Madi Yanofsky also contributed to the writing of the track.
  • Hannah Lux Davis (Halsey, Ariana Grande, and Doja Cat) directed the video. After unsuccessfully reaching out to several other directors, Barrett's team tapped Davis for the clip. They found out she was already a lo-key fan and loved her work, so she was happy to shoot her visual.
  • The song is the lead single from Nessa Barrett's Pretty Poison EP. The singer coordinated the release of the record on September 10, 2021 to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day.
