Songfacts®:

  • Heartbreak Weather has a loose concept running through it about a relationship from the start to the end looking at it from different sides. This song is at the beginning of the romance when Niall Horan is addressing the need for patience. He is saying take your time on the courtship rather than rushing into it and messing the relationship up.
  • Horan performed the live debut of "Dear Patience" from his London apartment. The March 25, 2020 performance came as part of Jimmy Kimmel Live, which the host broadcast from his home because of the global coronavirus pandemic.
  • Horan told Fallon he feels the track has become increasingly poignant because of the upheaval created by COVID-19. "I just thought - it's an album track, but I thought it was really relevant right now because I wrote it at a time when I needed to be patient," he explained. "And if anyone needs to patient right now, it's all of us.

He added: "This song is basically me writing a letter to the feeling of patience, like, 'C'mon, dude. Let's go for a drink. We haven't spoke in a while.' So, I feel like we can all - it's very relevant right now."
