• Nickelback had more trouble penning this song than any other of the numerous tracks they've penned over the years. Chad Kroeger explained to Noisecreep why it took the band six weeks to complete it. Said the Nickelback frontman: "We had the verse and we knew the verse was good and then the chorus just kept kicking us into mediocreville. And it just wasn't coming around. So we rewrote and rewrote and rewrote and rewrote until one day, out of pure frustration, I was just like, 'God, we're just smashing our faces into the same wall over and over again! This is like some episode of the f---ing Twilight Zone! And I grabbed the guitar and it just came right out. And Joe [Moi, producer] was like, 'Oh, dude, do that again!' And I was like, 'What?' And he was like, 'Just do what you just did there.' And I sang this little melody and went round and round. And he's like, 'That's us right there.' And I was like, 'Oh God, it doesn't have to be this difficult."

I was going through depression, post break up, suicidal, health problems. I was suicidal because I was f--king bored and because I hated my job even though it paid me over 200k a year. I would go out in the trail behind my house at two or three in the morning and listen to the song during the week. Specifically: “say it if it’s worth saving me.” I was saying that out loud to myself but I was thinking I wish my ex-girlfriend would say that to me and confirm that my life’s worth saving. Because I don’t see a whole lot of reasons.
  
  I left that miserable job and joined the new place and so far a little happier. Time to start over again, trying to start a new life for myself.
  
  I do miss the old days, and I talk to her from time to time and I’ll talk to her even though I’m talking to myself as if she is standing next to me.

• Another Burned Out Lawyer from Middle Class UsaDuring the pandemic I quit my job of 10 years at a very high-paying law firm for another one for less money, more opportunity, and more growth potential. During the pandemic, I would get up at two or three in the morning and go wandering around up a hill nearby and I remember this song. I would think of my old girlfriend who was like a guardian angel to me during our time together but things got f--ked up and we broke up for different reasons. However I remember the lyrics say “say it if it’s worth saving me.” I would say that out loud as I pondered my miserable job and looked up at the star pattern. Eventually I got my answer. Quit my job, move on with life and hopefully be happier.

Or it could be more spiritual like trying to atone for sins before death.
