Songfacts®:

  • This is a bittersweet song about accepting the need to move on from a broken romance. Norah Jones yearns for a lost "paradise," a state of happiness or security that's no longer attainable.
  • The "Paradise" video is a visual exploration of the song's theme. Jones wanders a sun-drenched amusement park alongside a young girl, the singer's younger self. The young girl mirrors Jones' actions as they check out the games and rides. As Jones sings about letting go, both she and her younger self loosen their grip on the roller coaster's handlebars.
  • The song started as one line Jones wrote on the piano early one morning before everyone got up. "You know when you have a family there's not a lot of silence," she told UK newspaper The Sun. "And you need silence for things to pop into your mind."
  • Jones released "Paradise" via Blue Note Records on January 19, 2024, as the second single from her ninth album, Visions.
  • Visions is an album inspired by some vivid dreams Jones experienced. Following the introspection and darkness of her previous record, Pick Me Up Off the Floor, Visions marks a shift. Blue Note President Don Was describes it as Jones "seeing light at the end of a tunnel that had engulfed her four years previously and is offering guidance, comfort, and joy to others who may find themselves standing at similar crossroads."
  • Jones co-wrote "Paradise" alongside Leon Michels, the multi-instrumentalist and producer best known for his work with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.
