Songfacts®:

  • This Prince-inspired hip shaker is the first single from American rock band OK Go's third studio album, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.
  • The song was written in the rarely used 5/4 time signature. Other songs in 5/4 time include "15 Step" by Radiohead and "Take Five" by The Dave Brubeck Quartet.
  • The music video was directed by OK Go with Tim Nackashi and it uses props purchased at the 99¢ Only Store. Like a number of OK Go videos, it was shot in one continuous take.
  • The album title comes from an 1876 book entitled The Influence of the Blue Ray of the Sunlight and of the Blue Color of the Sky, which promoted the erroneous theory that blue light cures all ills.
  • In the song's music video the band's frontman Damian Kulash and bassist Tim Nordwind are clad in stripey sweaters. Kulash told Spin magazine about their striking apparel: "We got them in an army surplus store, so I assume some army somewhere made them. If you want your army surplus sweater to look like mind did, then you have to putt some gaffer tape on the sleeves. And if you want it to look like Tim's then you have to dye it pink. Also, I should add that the clothing in the video was a collaboration between us and a designer named Jasmin Shokrian."
