Songfacts®:

  • Olivia Rodrigo closes her Sour album with a message of love and support to a couple of people: a victim of abuse at home and a classmate ostracized by her parents. Both have been affected emotionally by their experiences, and Rodrigo expresses her solidarity with these down-on-their-luck individuals.
  • On the face of it these are two personal stories where Rodrigo is addressing people she once knew but has since lost touch with. However, the singer revealed they have come from her imagination and are secondhand stories she has collected from friends.
  • This is one of only two tracks on Sour, the other being "Jealousy, Jealousy," that is not based on a romantic premise. Instead, "Hope Ur Ok" is a message of support and sympathy to people who are less emotionally fortunate than herself.
  • Rodrigo cited in her Sour Diary "Journal/Zine" two lyrics from this song as being her favorites on Sour. They are:

Hope he took his bad deal and made a royal flush

Hope you know how proud I am you were created with the courage to unlearn all of their hatred
  • Personnel on this track:

Dan Nigro – background vocals, organ, drum programmer
Ryan Linvill – bass, acoustic guitar
    Sam Stewart – guitar
  • Randy Merrill is the mastering engineer. Merrill, who worked on the entire Sour album, is considered one of the finest mastering engineers of his era. He has twice won a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, for his work on Beck's Colors and Hyperspace records.
  • Olivia Rodrigo told Zach Sang why she chose to close Sour with this song. "I feel like it's super hopeful," she said. "Sour is a very sort of sad, angry, emotional record, and I wanted to end it with a song that was like, you know, 'We're all gonna be all right. We're gonna get over it. Everything's gonna be OK, and we have each other.' It was really important for me to end this sort of somber record on that note."
