Songfacts®:

  • Here, a forlorn Ryan Tedder reminisces on a romance that unexpectedly ended.

    Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
    Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we fly?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
But didn't we, didn't we say goodbye?

There was a time when the two were fully committed to each other, so Tedder is wondering what went wrong in their relationship.
  • OneRepublic vocalist Ryan Tedder and bass player Brent Kutzle wrote the song along with:

Ryan Tedder's frequent songwriting partner Zach Skelton.

British songwriter/producer James "JHart" Abrahart, whose other credits include the UK hit songs "Don't Look Down" by Martin Garrix, "Body On Me" by Rita Ora, and "Sax" by Fleur East.

Norwegian producer Kygo, whose remix of Whitney Houston's version of "Higher Love" was an international hit in 2019.

Tedder and Kutzle also produced the song along with John Nathaniel.
  • Christian Lamb shot the music video mostly in one take. The filmmaker's resumé includes being Madonna's official tour video director as well as helming OneRepublic's clips for "Rescue Me" and "Wanted."
  • OneRepublic performed the live debut of "Didn't I" on the March 30, 2020 episode of The Tonight Show: At Home Edition. They played a stripped-down version of the track with Tedder accompanied by his bandmates on electric guitar and cello.
