Songfacts®:

  • P.P. Arnold's first marriage produced two children, Kevin and Debbie. In 1977, Debbie was killed in a car crash; Arnold wrote this eulogy for her late daughter.
  • Producer Steve Craddock had arranged for the track to be recorded with a choir and pipe organ at Exeter Cathedral. He recalled to Mojo magazine that Arnold objected to the "too sorrowful" bass organ parts, and a compromise was eventually reached.
  • Arnold's vocal was recorded in one take. Craddock recalled to Mojo: "At the end of it, she was just on the floor, in tears, shaking. It was one of the most incredible, moving things I've ever seen."
