Songfacts®:

  • After winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the title theme to the 1955 film Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, pop composer Sammy Fain and lyricist Paul Francis Webster reunited to write the theme for April Love, a 1957 musical starring Pat Boone and Shirley Jones. Boone plays a city boy who falls in love with a Kentucky farm girl. She falls for him when he sings "April Love," all about not letting love pass you by, at a dance.
  • Boone caused a controversy when he refused to kiss his co-star Shirley Jones during a romantic scene on a Ferris wheel. Many chalked his refusal up to his staunch religious beliefs, being both a pastor and a gospel singer, but Boone set the record straight: "I didn’t want to rock my marriage boat."
  • This was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, but lost to Frank Sinatra's "All the Way" for the movie The Joker Is Wild.
  • This was featured on Tales From the Crypt in the 1992 episode "Split Personality," and on Quantum Leap in the episodes "Good Morning, Peoria - September 9, 1959" (1989) and "A Leap for Lisa - June 25, 1957" (1992).
