Songfacts®:

  • This was written by Eddie Schwartz, a guitarist, producer and songwriter who had written "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," which was a hit for Pat Benatar in 1980. Eddie was living in New York when he started writing this with another songwriter named Rob Friedman. They mapped out part of the verse and had some musical ideas, but forgot about it shortly thereafter. A little while later, Eddie joined a band with Lenny Zakatek, who was a singer with The Alan Parsons Project. Along with Dave Tyson, they went to Toronto and worked on an album.

Realizing they needed another song, Eddie played them some of "Don't Shed a Tear" and they developed it in a jam session. Eddie came up with the guitar intro and they had a groove for it, but no lyrics except the idea for the title. As he did with "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," Eddie wrote the lyrics in the studio in about 15 minutes, which Lenny then sang. They put the song on a compilation that went out to record companies they hoped would sign the band. A few days later Tommy Mottola (an executive at Sony Records and future husband of Mariah Carey) called Eddie and told him he loved "Don't Shed a Tear" and wanted to sign the band. Soon after, Rob Friedman, who had started writing the song with Eddie, heard it and was not pleased because he had been forgotten in the process.

Schwartz told Songfacts: "It was all inadvertent, but Rob was very upset about the whole thing. On top of that, he hated the lyrics. We got into a strange situation where Tommy Mottola was telling us it was a hit single and he wanted to sign the band, and we had the co-writer of the song telling us he hated it. Everybody calmed down, things worked themselves out and for reasons that were totally unmusical but had to do with negotiations between the manager and Tommy Mottola, we never ended up signing the deal and the band didn't stay together."
  • Sally Perryman, who worked for Schwartz' publishing company in England, brought this song to the attention of Paul Carrack's producer. They loved it and ended up cutting it. Rob Friedman felt much better about the song when he saw the kind of response it was getting.
  • This led Eddie to a gig producing The Doobie Brothers' 1989 reunion album Cycles. The Doobies loved the sound of this song and asked Eddie to work with them.
  • Carrack performed on several hit songs, but this was his first big single as a solo artist. In 1972, he wrote and sang on "How Long" as a member of the group Ace. He also sang "Tempted" by Squeeze and was a member of Mike + The Mechanics, where he sang on their hits "All I Need Is A Miracle" and "The Living Years." He had 2 more Top-40 hits on his own - "One Good Reason" and "I Live By The Groove," which was also written by Schwartz.

  • Margaret from ScotlandSaw Paul in January. His show was outstanding and if possible, I'd say voice is only getting better. Amazing.
  • Kayla from Winnipeg, MbThis is a really great song! I think that Paul Carrack is terribly underrated! He was great solo and with Mike + The Mechanics! My favourite song by him is "One Good Reason".. there is one part on that song that I play over and over and over again because it's just so good! I love it! <3
  • Keith from Philadelphia, PaSo underrated.........great track
  • Hanny from Roden, NetherlandsPaul Carrack has got one of the most beautiful voices. And I know for afact that he himself doesn't mind not having a superstardom career, but I think if he would ,he could.
His style can sometimes be compared to the style of his friend Phil Collins.(Phil has been playing on some of the Mike & the mechanics albums and they have been touring together a few years ago)
  • Steve from Torrance, CaThe name of the album this song appeared on is "One Good Reason", not "When you walk in the room". Paul used producer Christopher Neil and drummer Peter Van Hooke from Mike + the Mechanics, guitarist Tim Renwick, and keyboardist Paul "Wix" Wickens.
  • Joshua from Twin Cities, MnOn the first Mike + The Mechanics album, Carrack actually sang lead on "Silent Running", NOT "All I Need Is A Miracle". "Miracle" was actually sung by the late Paul Young (not the same Paul Young who covered "Everytime You Go Away" that same year).
  • Joe from St. Louis, MoPaul Carrack wrote the song "Love Will Keep Us Alive" that was sung by Timothy B.Scmidt when he was with The Eagles reunion. Appears of Hell Freezes Over
  • Geri from Nova Scotia, CanadaPaul Carrack, in my opinion, could sing the telephone directory! One of Rock's most amazing voices.
