Songfacts®:

  • This was Paul McCartney's first true solo UK #1. Since leaving the Beatles his previous UK #1s had been "Mull Of Kintyre" credited to Wings and "Ebony And Ivory" credited to Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Overall, it was his 25th UK #1 as a writer.
  • The line in the song, "In love our problems disappear" was taken from the 1913 Nobel Prize winning Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). The original quotation was: "In love all of life's contradictions dissolve and disappear."
  • In the US this was the B-side to a high-pitched Soul ballad "So Bad," which peaked at #23.
  • The music video featured Paul McCartney playing two different soldiers on opposing sides of trenches in World War 1. It recreated the incident where the opposing sides played a football match in No Man's Land on Christmas Day, 1914. The Farm's 1991 UK hit "All Together Now" was based on the same incident.
