Songfacts®:

  • This song was inspired by a visit made by Paul Simon to Abadiânia, a small town in central Brazil that is home to the healer John of God. "I was suffering from reoccurring violent nightmares, I stayed the night at a place called the Casa where this healer lived," he explained at an album playback and Q&A, "I was asked to play a song so I walked around the Casa playing 'The Sound of Silence' whenever I went near the people they began weeping." • The visit to John of God was a success. Simon recalled in the album's liner notes: "It was an intense experience meeting with him there and, although I had no serious illness, I came away feeling that something had been cleansed from my being that was troubling."
