Songfacts®:

  • Paul Weller ruminates on the need for some self-control on this playful klezmer. He explained to Mojo magazine he penned the song after a row with his wife, Hannah.

"For me it was a little bit tongue-in, he said, "but I wrote it after I'd been heavily rucking with my missus and I just thought, this is what we need. A little bit of self-control, a step back. Equanimity."
  • The Beatles-esque klezmer is, according to Weller, a "bit of everything: a bit of Pepper; a bit of '30s Berlin; a bit of Mills Brothers harmonies."
  • That's Jim Lea playing the mournful violin solo. Best known as multi-instrumentalist and co-writer for Slade, Lea's most notable violin contribution was on their 1971 hit "Coz I Love You."
