Songfacts®:

  • "Jumble Queen" is a horn-driven soul-rock stomp recorded by Paul Weller for his 17th solo album, 66. This time around, Weller wasn't in the mood for verbose lyric-writing, so he did what any sensible musician would do: roped in a mate to help. And that mate was a certain Noel Gallagher.
  • Gallagher wrote the lyrics quickly after Weller messaged him about the song. As Gallagher recounted to Mojo magazine, he was on his way to grab a bite to eat when his phone pinged with a message from Weller: "I've got this tune. Do you want to write some lyrics?"

"I scribbled down some train-of- thought stuff, sent it back to him half an hour later, and that was Jumbo Queen. It was all inspiration," he recalled.

Gallagher didn't hear a peep from Weller about it for a whole year - until he finally listened to the album and realized his hastily scribbled words had made the cut.
  • Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher have collaborated several times before, including:

    "Champagne Supernova" (1995)
Weller played guitar on this Oasis track from their album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

    "Echoes Round the Sun" (2008)
This was their first official songwriting collaboration, appearing on Weller's album 22 Dreams. Gallagher provided the backing track idea, while Weller added the melody and lyrics.

    "The Attic" (2012)
Gallagher played guitar on this track from Weller's album Sonik Kicks.

    "When Your Garden's Overgrown" (2012)
Another collaboration from Sonik Kicks, where Gallagher played bass.

Gallagher and Paul Weller co-wrote the song "Birth of an Accidental Hipster" for the Monkees' 2016 album Good Times!
  • As for the meaning of the song? Well, that's a bit more elusive. The lyrics seem to nod at modern life, media saturation, and the general chaos of living in a world where information flies at you faster than you can process it. "Jumble Queen" could well be a metaphor for the tangled mess that is today's social media landscape, or maybe it's something else entirely. Weller is refreshingly noncommittal about it. When Hot Press asked him if the song was about anyone in particular, his response was a classic shrug of uncertainty: "Don't think so, man. I could hazard a guess, but I won't."
  • The album's title, 66, is no great mystery, though. Weller dropped the album on May 24, 2024, just a day shy of his 66th birthday.
